Booked for a seagull impression? Football's strangest cards

Iliman Ndiaye

Guess what? You can now get booked in the Premier League for pretending to be a seagull!

Iliman Ndiaye scored the only goal in Everton's 1-0 win at Brighton and celebrated by flapping his arms like a gull in front of the home fans, whose team is nicknamed the Seagulls.

He got a yellow card for celebrating too much, which left fans on social media scratching their heads about what he did wrong.

According to Law 12 in the IFAB Laws of the Game: "Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive; choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time wasting.

"Leaving the field of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable offence, but players should return as soon as possible."

A player must be cautioned for actions like climbing fences, approaching spectators unsafely, or acting provocatively, even if the goal is disallowed. However, the seagull imitation isn't the oddest reason for a yellow or red card in football. BBC Sport highlights other unusual incidents, such as when Paul Gascoigne jokingly showed a yellow card to a referee in a 1995 match between Rangers and Hibernian. The referee didn't find it amusing and booked Gascoigne for dissent. Despite Rangers winning 7-0, this incident is what the game is most remembered for.
