When MIT professor and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) member Peter Shor first showed how quantum computers could solve problems faster than classical ones, he inspired scientists to explore many possibilities for this...
Several years ago, a team of scientists from MIT and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell created and launched a unique web programming course for incarcerated individuals in various correctional facilities. The program, Brave Behind Bars, uses ...
Large language models (LLMs) are becoming more useful for programming and robotics tasks. However, for complex reasoning problems, there is still a big gap between these systems and humans. Without the ability to learn new concepts like humans, these...
A new tool makes it easier for database users to perform complex statistical analyses of tabular data without needing to understand the underlying processes. GenSQL, a generative AI system for databases, can help users make predictions, detect anomal...
On the journey from the suburbs to the city, the tree canopy often decreases as skyscrapers rise. A group of New England Innovation Academy students wondered why this happens. "Our friend Victoria noticed that in Marlborough, where we live, there are...
Ask a large language model (LLM) like GPT-4 to smell a rain-soaked campsite, and it will politely decline. Ask the same system to describe that scent, and it will wax poetic about “an air thick with anticipation" and “a scent that is both fresh and e...
